Title: HMS GENERAL MONK
Caption: On 8 April 1782, the HMS GENERAL MONK, under Captain Rogers, in company with HMS QUEBEC and the privateer FAIR AMERICAN, entered Cape May channel in pursuit of an American merchant convoy accompanied by HYDER ALLY, under Captain Joshua Barney. The American fleet got underway and dispersed in the bay. HYDER ALLY engaged GENERAL MONK in a 10 minute battle which necessitated the English ship to strike her colors. Under a prize crew, GENERAL MONK was sailed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was later purchased by the national government and taken into the Continental Navy under her original name USS GENERAL WASHINGTON.
