"Planting" a fir tree at Falcon's Landing, Iceland
Title: "Planting" a fir tree at Falcon's Landing, Iceland
Caption: View taken circa February 1942 showing Seaman E.W. Fox, USN, of USS VULCAN (AR-5), "Planting" a fir tree at Falcon's Landing, 30 miles from Reykjavik, Iceland, while Ensign George M. Williams, USNR, from USS TUSCALOOSA (CA-37) looks on. USS WICHITA (CA-45) is visible just above sea. Fox's head (R). Back of mountcard: Spring Planting in Iceland! Only tree in Iceland, - that's the claim of the sailors of the North Atlantic convoy fleet that Uncle Sam keeps near his Iceland base for this scrubby fir tree, one planted and cared for by the men on Falcon Landing, 30 miles from Reykjavik. In dirt brought from other shores, this tree seems to be flourishing, but will not live when the soil around it becomes exhausted. Ensign G.M. Williams, USS TUSCALOOSA, looks on as E.W. Fox, seaman from the USS VULCAN, softens the soil around the tree. A metal plaque has been erected to the tree by members of visiting ship's crews.
