Description: (SS-109) In dry dock at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, 19 March 1928, after salvage. The original caption reads: In drydock with bodies of 8 seamen still sealed in one of its compartments. The ill-fated S-4 was placed in drydock and the sea water drained out of her ..., today for the first time the gaping hole in her side made by the Coast Guard Destroyer Paulding came into view. Photo shows Comdr. Saunders placing a wreath over the spot where the 8 bodies of seamen still lie entombed in the sub. The hole made in S-4 hull is still below the water level in this photograph.
