Description: Photo #: NH 41722 Mock battleship Recruit If any German submarine is looking around Union Square, N.Y., it must be dazzled and confused by the variety and brilliance of the new war paint on the battleship Recruit. The ship has been camouflaged, the painting being done by 24 girl artists from the reserve corps of the National League for Womens Service. (quoted from the original 1918-vintage photo caption) The Recruit was erected in New York City during World War I to assist in Navy recruiting efforts. Her color scheme, as seen here, resembles the dazzle camouflage used on many Navy and merchant ships during the war's last year. Photographed by Kadel & Herbert.
