Title: American squadron under command of Commodore John Shaw USN proceeding to sea from the harbor of Port Mahon, March 25, 1816
Caption: The American Squadron under command of Commodore John Shaw USN proceeding to sea from the harbor of Port Mahon, March 25, 1816. Left to right: Frigate UNITED STATES, flying the Commodore's pennant at the main truck. (Shows 16 gun ports on gun deck whereas 15 is correct number). 2. Large ship under sail in harbor entrance may be either the ERIE, Captain Crane or ONTARIO, Captain Downes (sloops-of-war). 3. Probably the Sloop-of-war ERIE, but possibly the Sloop of War ONTARIO. 4. Frigate JAVA, Captain O.H. Perry. 5. Frigate JOHN ADAMS, Captain Trenchard (half hidden by land). 6. Frigate CONSTELLATION, Captain Gordon (at anchor preparing to get underway. From the log books of the United States and JOHN ADAMS it has been determined that on 28 March sailed the JAVA, CONSTELLATION, JOHN ADAMS and ERIE, followed on 30 March by the UNITED STATES and U.S. Schooner HORNET, 5 guns, Lt. Claxton. The latter vessel is probably in the picture somewhere at anchor near the shore. The ONTARIO had arrived at Port Mahon from a four day cruise on 22 March and her subsequent sailing date has not been found. The only other vessel of the Squadron, the Ship ALERT, Lt. Walter Stewart, had sailed from Port Mahon on 14 March and is probably not in the picture. Italian watercolor painting courtesy of Mrs. Virginia Lynch Millard, Norfolk, VA. 1939.
