Caption: Memorial to John P. Holland in the city of Paterson. 1844-1914. John P. Holland, Inventor - Educator and Citizen of Paterson. Erected as a memorial and tribute to his genius. This, the first successful submarine was designed by John P. Holland built by the Delamater Iron Works, New York. Launched May 1881. Equipped with compressed air torpedo tube and Brayton Petroleum Engine by Todd & Rafferty Paterson with a crew of two, it could operate submerged to a depth of sixty feet. Displacement 19 tons - Length 31 feet - Beam 6 feet - Depth 7 feet 4 inches. Presented to the City of Paterson by Edward A. Browne. 1927.
