Hamilton, First Secretary of the Treasury, 1789-1795, died on July 12, 1804, and was buried with impressive ceremonies in Trinity Churchyard on July 14, 1804. He had been mortally wounded in a duel with his bitter political rival, Aaron Burr, on July 11, below Weehawken Heights, New Jersey. "Alexander Hamilton, The Corporation of Trinity Church has erected this in Testimony of their respect for the Patriot of Incorruptible Integrity, the Soldier of approved Valor, the Statesman of consummate Wisdom, whose Talents and Virtues will be admired. Grateful posterity long after this marble shall have mouldered into dust. He died July 12, 1804. Aged 47."
