Caption: 10 November 1943: "Nazis attend to saving lives-their own: While quicker comrades float away from the abandoned sub in pneumatic life rafts, other Nazis work with a fervor born of fear. No thought of manning the guns at hand, they stand atop the conning tower feverishly rigging the rafts. One man (on the right) is just ready to slip into the water. Another treads water a short distance from the sub. Not a shot was fired by the Nazis after a combined strafing-bombing attack by USS CARD pilots."
