The packet ship "SHACKAMAXON", 1851.
Title: The packet ship "SHACKAMAXON", 1851.
Caption: Lithograph by John R. Isaac. From a painting by C.P. Williams. The "SHACKAMAXON," one of the Philadelphia and Liverpool Packet Line Ships, owned by Messrs, George McHenry & Co., was commanded by Captain William Henry West and was one of the luxury ships of her day. She was among the famous packet ships which are considered as the forerunners of the modern ocean liners in that they ran between specified points on a regular schedule, and also because they offered the passenger what contemporary hand-bills called " the most palatial and luxurious accommodations".
