Title: USS S-48 (SS-159) 1922-1944.
Caption: An Indian princess as sponsor, five other members of the Mohican tribe, and a bottle of real champagne, were the outstanding features of the launching of the Submarine S-48. The Native American Indian princess, selected as sponsor, in private life is Sponsors Mrs. James O. Germaine of Norwich, CT. She is a member of the ancient tribe of Mohicans and is known as Princess Tocoomas. With her are five other members of the Mohican tribe in their old time habiliment. The photo shows the Native American's present at the launching. Left to right: Lemuel Fielding, Chief Counsel Mohican Indian; Loretta Fielding and Princess Tocoomas, 28 February 1921. Regarded as the "last word" in submarine construction, she is double hulled and constructed as to withstand the water pressure of 200 feet, submergence, and is especially designed for protection against depth charge shock. The radio apparatus is designed to work either under or above water. Her battery will consist of 5 21 inch torpedo tubes, four forward and one aft, and one four inch gun.
