Trotti, examines aerial photos through stereoscope, assisted by Captain Pierson, who is Bn.-3 officer since death of Major (William R.) Day. (quoted, with given names added in parentheses, from the original 1945 vintage photo caption). Photographed by D.G. Christian. LtCol. Trotti and Major Day (the 26th Marines' operations officer) were killed by the same mortar shell during the morning of 22 February 1945, while their regiment was attacking Japanese positions near Iwo Jima's Airfield Number Two. The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files.
