First Peking relief expedition of 1900 during the retreat. American and British contingents were deployed behind the embankment of the Pei-Ho river at a point between Yant Sun and the Siku arsenal. They were under fire from Chinese artillery. Chinese cavalry (not shown) are deploying in the distance apparently preliminary to attacking. British bluejackets are in the foreground. American detachment is in the background. The group standing on top of the embankment includes Admiral Seymour, RN and Commander McCalla, USN. The junk in the right foreground contains the wounded and supplies.
