Caption: First dry dock built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1846. Note man in frock coat and silk hat, inspecting the dock. From press notice of 17 January 1914: "Rear Admiral E.H.C. Leutze, U.S.N. Retired, called upon the Secretary of the Navy Daniels and presented to the Navy Department, a daguerreotype of the first dry dock built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The daguerreotype shows the dock while in process of construction in 1846, and it was supervised by Civil Engineer William Jarvis McAlpin, father-in-law of Rear Admiral Leutze..."
