Caption: American clipper ship COMET, 1836 tons, built at Mystic Connecticut in 1851. The COMET, one of the famous China Clippers, is pictured here in the grip of the hurricane of 1852 off Bermuda. With skillful seamanship of her commander Captain E.C. Gardiner, she weathered the storm, in which many ships were lost. Probably her fastest voyage was from Liverpool to Hong Kong, which she did in 84 days and 16 hours.
