Caption: Noord Americaaniche Flage (Flages/Flags flown by ALLIANCE and SERAPIS in the Port of Texel, Holland, October 4-5, 1779. Oil on canvas, 18" x 15.25", by Midshipman George W. Campbell, USN, (1902-1971), after Dutch artist. American flags painted by a Dutch officer after battle between ships. Top flag flew on the ALLIANCE, the bottom flag flew on the SERAPIS, John Paul Jones's prize ship, taken from the British in one of the most desperate sea fights of the Revolutionary War. Commodore Byron McCandless USN discovered the painting of these flags in the records of the shipping office of the port of Texel in 1921. The original paintings are now in the Chicago Historical Society. Signed and dated by artist, 1925. Painting in the U.S. Naval Academy Museum Collection, ACC. # 25.9. Gift of Commander Byron McCandless, USN, 1925.
