Caption: Prepares for a water landing near a destroyer during the Okinawa invasion, 1 April 1945. It had been badly crippled by Japanese anti-aircraft fire, losing much of its horizontal tail. The plane, from USS ESSEX (CV-9), made a perfect water landing and the destroyer rescued it's crew.
