Caption: Two air group five air crewmen wear oversized "medals" at a party on board, at the time of the Marshalls and Gilberts operation, circa November - December 1943. The medals represent shipmates' ideas of suitable awards for their deeds. At left is ARM2c W.J. Histler, with what may be a "Distinguished Flying Cross" for shooting down a Japanese bomber from the rear seat of his dive bomber. E.B. Brunson wears a "Purple Heart" for a bullet wound received during an air attack on the Japanese.
