S-514 Charles F. Speraw Collection

Collection of 13 photographs obtained by Mr. Speraw during his service aboard USS Turkey (AM-13) during the sweeping of the North Sea mine barrage in 1919. Seven of the images depict minesweepers and minesweeping in the North Sea, 1919, and include a “Bird” class minesweeper; exploding mines (one between USS Turkey & USS Robin, 22 August 1919); minesweepers at sea; and USS Turkey’s sweep wire trailing from her stern (as seen from onboard). Also included is a single photographs of Swedish merchant ship Othalla with her stern blown off, reportedly by a torpedo. Five photographs of the interned German fleet at Scape Flow, shortly before, and during, its scuttling on 21 June 1919 are also among the collection. These images include German destroyers, battleships, battle cruisers, and light cruisers, including the Von Der Tann. Several of the images from the collection have been cataloged at the item level into the NH photograph series: NH 101165-NH 101173.
