2018.02 Susan Jelley Palsbo Collection

10 photos related to USS Arkansas (BB-33) circa 1928. The images are from the collection of RADM Joseph F. Jelley; however it is unknown whether they were taken by Jelley himself. The USS Arkansas was his first ship assignment following his graduation from the US Naval Academy (1927). Several of the photos appear to show training and weapons exercises, and may be part of the June 1928 joint Army-Navy coast defense exercise as part of the hostile "attacking" fleet. Also included is a single photo of what appears to be a native marketplace. This could be either Cuba (in May 1928 she sailed along the east coast of the Atlantic, with a stop at Cuba) or the Caribbean near the Canal Zone (where she sailed in early 1929). A photo of sailors at the Brooklyn Bridge is likely as USS Arkansas returned to the United States in May 1929, for an overhaul in the New York Navy Yard.
