Collection of 52 photographs taken during the Spanish America War (1898) while aboard USS Oregon (BB-3). The images are from the collection of Chief Engineer (later Rear Admiral) Milligan. The photos include fellow crew members, the USS Oregon at sea, the ship’s band, close-up of the ship, and general onboard activities. The collection also consists of six hand-written letters from Milligan to his daughters dated between June and August 1898. The letters note Milligan’s location at the time of their writing (off Santiago and in Guantanamo Bay) and include his activities while aboard ship.
Biographical information: Admiral Robert Wiley Milligan, 1843-1909 - American naval and civil engineer; served in the navy during Civil War, instructor US Naval Academy (1879-1882, 1885-1889), Board of Inspectors and Survey (1893-1896), chief engineer of battleship USS Oregon, contributed greatly to its success and performance during Spanish American war and retired as rear admiral.
