Montgomery, Captain John Berrien
Title: Montgomery, Captain John Berrien
Caption: Montgomery served as Executive Officer on the frigate CONSITITUTION in 1835. Promoted to commander in 1839, he commanded PORTSMOUTH in Sloat's Squadron on the West Coast during the Mexican War. He was commissioned a captain in 1853, commanded the Pacific Squadron in 1861, and became commodore (Ret) in 1862. He commanded Charlestown (Massachusetts) Navy Yard 1862-63 and Washington Navy Yard 1863-65. In 1866 he was commissioned Rear Admiral (Ret). He died on 25 March 1873 and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington D.C.
