Approximately 750 loose photographs and 4 photo albums dealing with the service career and personal life of John Lansing Callan, from Lieutenant (USN) to Captain, in the period from approximately 1910-1946. There is a strong focus on early naval aviation as well as civilian aviation, particularly float planes. This includes many detailed photos of airframes, engines, and cockpits of early aircraft, including construction techniques. Many images of World War I and World War II in Europe. Individuals seen throughout include noteworthy figures from the Navy and the civilian aviation community. Some photos have been assigned NH numbers or removed to the NH collection.

There are 35 views that show various aspects of the fighting along that front, including mountains, trenches, troops, etc. Venice from the air. 36 page scrapbook taken late 1914 in Italy. Album has good captions, many individuals seen including Callan, particularly in leisure activities and travel tourism.

15 page scrapbook with detailed photography of facilities and activities at US Naval Air Station Moutchic, France, August 1917. Callan was first Commanding Officer. Images of Curtiss “F” Boats, personnel including Captain N. C. Twining. Photos from last few pages of scrapbook have come loose and are out of order. Also contains some copy negatives.

16 page scrapbook with images in Italy and France circa 1918. Of particular note is establishment of US Naval Aviation Headquarters, Rome. Numerous personnel including Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Lieutenant Godfrey  Chevalier. Photos in this album are fragile and coming loose from pages.
