Regional crises broke out in various parts of the world, each of which had the potential to escalate into wider conflicts when Western powers and Communist powers squared off on opposite sides.  In this image, USS Helena (CA-75) mobilizes for potential deployment during the 1956 Suez Crisis.  The previous year it had led in the evacuation of Chinese Nationalists from the Tachen (Dachen) Islands in the Taiwan Straits.  Other conflicts arose over the Suez Canal, and in Turkey, Lebanon, and Cuba.
