Navy Unit Commendation - River Division 553

The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION to

RIVER DIVISION 553

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

For exceptionally meritorious service during operations against enemy forces in the Republic of Vietnam from 1 August 1969 to 1 May 1970. Tasked with halting the flow of enemy troops and supplies through the mountains and maze of canals in Kien Giang Province in the lower Mekong Delta region, River Division 553, operating under hazardous and extremely austere conditions, carried out an exceptionally aggressive and effective campaign. The patrolling and air support units stalked the narrow, heavy foliated and enemy infested canals in an unceasing effort to detect and defeat the enemy. Braving heavy fire at point-blank range, these Navy men consistently displayed qualities of courage, determination, and fighting spirit which reflected great credit upon themselves and their organization. Their valiant efforts contributed in large measure to the success of a most difficult campaign and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
