Yank (S.P. 908)

1917-1919

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel at the time of her acquisition.

(S.P. 908: length 60'0"; beam 10'0"; draft 2'9" (mean); speed 18.0 knots (cruising); complement 10; armament 1 1-pounder, 1 .30-caliber machine gun)

Yank, a motorboat built in 1917 by Julius Peterson at Nyack, N.Y., was acquired by the Navy on 8 October 1917 from Mr. N. Ackerman of New York City and, given the identification number S.P. 908, was commissioned on 10 October 1917.

Assigned to section patrol duties in the Third Naval District, Yank patrolled the coasts of Rhode Island and Connecticut throughout America's participation in the Great War. She remained on the Navy Registrer after the Armistice but was finally returned to her former owner on St. Valentine's Day 1919. Her name was simultaneously stricken from the Navy Register.
