Sussex I (S. P. 685)

1917-1919

The first Sussex retained the name she carried at the time of her acquisition.

(S. P. 685: tonnage 67 (gross register); length 74'2"; beam 17'6"; draft 6'9"; speed 8.0 knots (maximum); complement 16; armament 2 1-pounders)

The first Sussex, a single-screw fishing vessel built in 1913 by R. T. Potter at Milton, Del, was acquired by the Navy on 5 May 1917 from the Delaware Fish Oil Co., Lewes, Del.; and, assigned the identification number S. P. 685, was commissioned on 9 August 1917.

Assigned to the Third Naval District, Sussex carried out section patrol duties and served there until March 1919. Stricken from the Navy Register on 11 March 1919, she was sold on 16 January 1920.
