(Id. No. 3880: displacement 9,004; length 375'8"; beam 46'7"; draft 24'; speed 11 knots)

Bahia -- completed at Hamburg, Germany, by Reiherstieg Schiffswerke & Maschinenfabrik, for the Hamburg Sudamerikanische Dampfshifffahrts Gesellschaft, served that company until interned at Montevideo, Uruguay, during the Great War.

Taken over by the Uruguayan  government and subsequently transferred to the custody of the United States Shipping Board (USSB), the ship, renamed Paysandú, sailed from Montevideo on 30 September 1918.

After reaching New York, N.Y., Paysandu received modifications to enable her carry troops and on 29 January 1919 was taken over by the Navy for use as a transport to return U.S. troops to the United States. Six months later, on 29 July 1919, she was placed out of service and turned over to the USSB for return to her owner, the Uruguyan government.
