One versed in the science of determining and making known the conditions of navigable waters, charting coasts, and surveying rivers.

Hydrographer, a wooden steam launch, was built in 1901 at Port Jefferson, N.Y., and engaged in survey work for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey until coining under Navy jurisdiction in 1917. She continued her surveying duties in the Gulf of Mexico and in addition performed section patrol in 1918. She was returned to the Coast and Geodetic Survey under an Executive order 1 April 1919.
