Eugene F. Price (S.P. 839)

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel at the time of her acquisition. 

(S.P. 839: tonnage 168 (gross); length between perpendiculars 125'5"; beam 18'9"; draft 8'8" (mean); speed 12.0 knots; complement 23; armament 2 1-pounders)

Eugene F. Price -- built at Bristol, Maine, in 1874 -- was purchased by the Navy and earmarked for employment as a minesweeper. Given the identification number S.P. 839, she was accepted for service on 8 June 1917 and commissioned on 29 June 1917, Lt. Walter S. Durkee, USNRF, in command.

Enrolled in the Naval Coast Defense Reserve and attached to the Second Naval District for minesweeping and patrol duties, Eugene F. Price was decommissioned and subsequently stricken from the Navy Register on 17 May 1919.
