The revenue cutter Windom served with the North Atlantic Squadron during the Spanish-American War but was never actually taken into the Navy at that time. She was renamed Comanche on 13 December 1915, and transferred from the Coast Guard to the Navy on 6 April 1917. Commissioned on 11 April 1917, she carried out patrol duties in the New Orleans, La., area until the summer of 1919. Comanche was stricken from the Navy List on 1 August 1919 and returned to the Treasury Department on 28 August 1919.
