A cape on the coast of New Jersey.
Cape May (No. 3520), a transport, was built in 1918 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Ltd., Sparrows Point, Md.; transferred to the Navy 24 October 1918; and commissioned the following day, Lieutenant Commander H. R. 0. Johnston, USNRF, in command.
Cape May cleared Baltimore 8 November 1918 laden with general cargo for the American Expeditionary Force in France. At St. Nazaire, France, between 24 November and 30 December, she loaded military supplies no longer required in the theater of war, and passengers for Newport News, where she arrived 15 January 1919. Cape May continued on to unload cargo at Baltimore, where she was converted for service as a troop transport. She made two voyages to France to bring servicemen home to New York City, and on 24 August 1919 arrived at Norfolk, Va., where she was decommissioned 25 August 1919. Cape May was returned to the Shipping Board the same day.
