Cacique (Id. No. 2213)

1918-1919

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel at the time of her acquisition. 

(Id. No. 2213: tonnage 6,202; length 394'2"; beam 52'3"; draft 27'11"; speed 10 knots; complement 70; armament 1 5-inch)

Cacique , a freighter, was built in 1910 by Short Brothers Co., Sunderland, England. Transferred to the Navy from the Shipping Board on 19 August 1918, the ship was assigned the identification number (Id. No.) 2213, and was commissioned the same day [19 August 1918], Lt. Cmdr. C. H. Winnett, USNRF, in command.

Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS), Cacique sailed from Norfolk, Va., on 30 August 1918 to begin her role in the task of supplying the Army in France. She made two voyages to Marseilles, France with general cargo, and returned to Baltimore, Md., on 2 March 1919.

Decommissioned at Baltimore on 24 March 1919, Cacique was returned to the Shipping Board the same day.
