Breakhorn (AM-353)

1943

This name appears on a list of bird names submitted to the Navy by Mr. Herbert Friedmann, the Curator of the Division of Birds at the Smithsonian Institution, on 31 December 1940 to be used in selecting names for minesweepers; but no other information about a bird called breakhorn has been found.

-----

Breakhorn (AM-353) was laid down on 18 September 1943 at the Willamette Iron & Steel Corp. and launched on Independence Day, 1944. However, the end of World War II in August 1945 resulted in the cancellation of the contract for her construction on 1 November 1945. Transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal on 21 October 1947, she was sold to Zidell Explorations, Inc., of Portland, Oregon, on 16 December 1947 and broken up for scrap.
