Scope and Content Note

The collection is comprised of historical materials originally held by the Bureau of Personnel, Special Assistant for Women's Policy (PERS-00W), and its predecessor agencies, Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for Women (PERS -K) and Chief of Naval Operations, Special Assistant for Women's Policy (OP-01W).

The collection contains biographical data on those women who held the position of Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for Women: Captain Robin L. Quigley; Captain Rita Lenihan; Captain Viola B. Sanders; Captain Winifred Quick Collins; Captain Louis K. WIlde; Captain Joy Bright Hancock; Captain Jean T. Palmer; and Captain Mildred McAfee Horton. The bulk of the collection, approximately 5.5 linear feet, is comprised of subject files.

Topics covered include billet reviews, congressional hearings, dependency and pregnancy policies, laws and legal matters, manpower listings, promotion plans, recruiting policy, training, and utilization of women in the military. There is also an extensive history file that spans the years 1963-1990. Printed material, 2.5 linear feet, includes reports, articles, and pamphlets relating to women in the military. Issues covered include sex discrimination, sexual harassment, men and women in ships, and career development. There is also a section of photographs depicting women in non-traditional jobs and other miscellaneous subjects.
