American Privateer POLLY Escapes from Ship HMS INDIAN, July 1812
Title: American Privateer POLLY Escapes from Ship HMS INDIAN, July 1812
Caption: On 14 July 1812, the privateer schooners MADISON (?), Captain Endicott, and POLLY, Captain Handy of Salem, Massachusetts, fell in with a ship and a brig which they supposed to be merchantmen. On arriving almost within gunshot of the ship, they saw she was a sloop of war, the HMS INDIAN of 20 guns, who, setting stunsails went in pursuit of POLLY, firing long bow chasers. Eventually, the breeze failed so far that INDIAN manned her launch with a four-pounder in the bow and a number of boats. These came and, with three cheers, made a brave dash at the Yankee who replied with musket shots and her broadside guns loaded with langridge. The launch was compelled to strike her colors and the other boats returned to INDIAN. The launch was not captured for INDIAN was slowly drifting within range and POLLY had to take to her sweeps to escape.
