Famous planting of the "second Stars and Stripes" on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, on 23 February 1945. An unidentified U.S. Marine went on board LST-779, beached near the base of the volcano, and borrowed this eight foot long battle ensign. Mr. Joe Rosenthal, Associated Press, inscribes the original photo "To Admiral Nimitz with greatest respect and admiration for pushing our lines in the Pacific to the enemy's shore."
