Title: L41-03.02.01 USCGC Tampa
Caption: Collection Photo # L41-03.02.01 "Coast Guard cutter Tampa towing the Chincoteague from Orange, Texas to Charleston, South Carolina in an undated photograph
Description: "By using an 8-inch nylon hawser to make this thousand mile tow, the Coast Guard furthered its continuing study to determine the relative advantages of nylon and manila cordage. Only by subjecting a nylon hawser to actual service operation over an extended period of time may a fair evaluation of its long-lividness be reached. Ease of handling, saving in storage space, and light weight, favor the use of nylon, but these must be supported by durability of long-lividness, for nylon costs about four times as much as manila."
