2017 CNO Naval History Essay Contest

On 2 February 2017, the Chief of Naval Operations announced the CNO Naval History Essay Contest to further our understanding of how lessons from history inform our way ahead. The goal of the contest is to inspire insight and dialog from across the widest spectrum of academic, operational, military, and civilian personnel both from within the naval services and those with a sincere interest in the history of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. There are two categories for participants to enter the contest: professional or amateur historians. The rules of the contest were promulgated in NAVADMIN 024/17 (see also the FAQs section below). This year's contest winners were announced on 18 August in NAVADMIN 202/17. First-place winners will present their papers in a panel format at the McMullen Naval History Symposium, held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, 13–15 September. These essays will subsequently be posted to NHHC’s website.
