Naval Base Kitsap, Washington

Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington
Aerial photo taken in June 1932 of Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington. Visible are the carriers USS Lexington (CV-2) and USS Saratoga (CV-3) at dock. Cruiser USS Astoria (CA-34) is under construction in dry dock at right center and Craneship No. 1 (ex-Kearsarge) is at end of the left dock. The Bremerton facilities were combined with Naval Submarine Base Bangor in 2004 to form Naval Base Kitsap (NH 94889).

Overview

Naval Base Kitsap is the largest naval organization in Navy Region Northwest. Located on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State, it was established on 4 June 2004 by merging five naval installations under one command, including Naval Station Bremerton, Naval Submarine Base Bangor, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport, Manchester Fuel Depot, and Jackson Park Housing. The base, which encompasses more than 10,000 acres, supports 70 tenant commands including Commander, Navy Region Northwest; Commander, Submarine Group 9; John C. Stennis  (CVN-74) Strike Group; and Naval Facilities and Engineering Command’s Northwest Headquarters. The base is also responsible for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF). The shipyard performs dry-dock and overhaul services for active naval vessels and serves as a home for several decommissioned warships, including aircraft carriers.
