Overview

The United States Navy established Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) shortly after the Japanese surrendered the base to the Allies on 30 August 1945. In 1951, the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility on CFAY became a key naval ship repair facility in the Far East—providing maintenance and repair to U.S. Seventh Fleet ships throughout the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Today, CFAY is the largest overseas U.S. naval installation in the world. It serves as the headquarters for the United States Seventh Fleet—currently the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. fleets, with 60 to 70 ships, 300 aircraft, and 40,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel. CFAY is also the headquarters for U.S. Naval Forces Japan/Navy Region Japan, a dual-hatted command with command and control authority of all shore installations and assigned forces of the U.S. Navy in Japan. Moreover, the installation is the home of the Navy’s only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76). The installation hosts 55 other tenant commands that support U.S. Navy Pacific operating forces and principal afloat elements of the United States Seventh Fleet.
