A unique method of bringing out the human side of Naval history is to look at the animals that have accompanied their Sailors to sea. Since the earliest days of Naval history, animals have been an integral part of the Fleet's past. Whether it is helping Sailors accomplish their jobs more easily, provide comfort when far from home, or even cause a ruckus and trouble aboard ship. The U.S. Navy as an institution is heavily influenced by American culture and values, and animals hold a high place in the U.S. Navy. The people of the United States possess tens of millions of pets. America loves animals and Sailors are no different.
