USN 710299: Arcon high altitude sounding rocket, November 1958

330-PS-9251 (USN 710299) Navy Rocket Assists in Air Research.   The Arcon high altitude sounding rocket leaves its launch at the National Aeronautical and Space Agency’s pilotless aircraft research station at Wallop’s Island, Virginia.  The new rocket was developed by the Atlantic Research Corporation, Alexandria, Virginia.   It will aid the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in the high atmosphere and the Navy’s Bureau of Ordnance in the study of forces of solid propellant rockets of different sizes.  The rocket is designed to carry a 40 pound payload of instruments to an altitude of approximately 65 miles.   Photograph released 20 November 1958.
