USN 709626: Aerobee Hi, June 1956

330-PS-7909 (USN 709626):   The Navy Research Rocket, Aerobee Hi, is fired from its launchers at U.S. Naval Ordnance Missile Test Facility, White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico, the Aerobee Hi carried 135 pounds of radio devices 163 miles above the Earth, June 29, 1956, to set a new altitude record for an American-built “boosted” rocket.  Less than a minute after take-off, the pencil-slim 23-foot rocket had attained a maximum speed of 4435 miles per hour.  The primary experiment performed with this research rocket was the measurement of various physical characteristics of the Ionosphere, that part of the Earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of 35 miles.
