USN 1036458:  Aviation Medical Accelerator Laboratory (AMAL), late 1950s.   As a vital part of the Naval Air Development Center at Johnsville, Pennsylvania, the AMAL houses the world’s largest human centrifuge in the center of the of the 110-foot floor is a 180-tone, 4,000 horsepower vertically mounted D-C motor.  Used in researching simulated space flights, the motor has an instantaneous rating of 16,000hp, late 1950s.   AMAL is noted for being used for flight simulation training for the Project Mercury astronauts.   Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
