1942: June 6:  Battle of Midway

During June 6, planes from the U.S. carriers USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Hornet (CV-8) pursued the retreating Japanese fleet, sinking the heavy cruiser Mikuma and damaging the destroyer Mogami.  The abandonded USS Yorktown (CV-5) was reboarded and salvage attempts began.  However, a successful torpedo attack by the Japanese submarine I-168 sank the destroyer USS Hammann (DD-412) and forced the salvage party to leave Yorktown.
