127-GW-983-71610:  Battle of Cape Gloucester, New Britain, December 1943-January 1944 .  “Prayer for Their Buddies”. Their chaplain says a benediction for Marines who lost their lives in the capture of the airport at Cape Gloucester.  The American flag has just been raised on the airport.  Major General William H. Rupertus,  Commanding General of the Marine Division which made the New Britain invasion, stands at left.   A wrecked Japanese bomber forms an ghostly altar during mass, January 1944.
