1944:   August 2:   Loss of USS Fiske (DE-143)

On August 2, 1944, German (Type IXC) U-boat, U-804, sank USS Fiske (DE-143) north of the Azores.  She was torpedoed on her starboard side, broke in two, and was abandoned.   Thirty-three of the crew died and 50 more were badly wounded.  Survivors were rescued by USS Farquhar (DE-139).   British Mosquito aircraft sank U-804 north-west of Gothenburg, Sweden, on April 9, 1945.   The only success the German submarine had on war patrol was with the U.S. Navy destroyer escort.
