LC-Lot-3452-3: Merchant Ships: Liberty. Biography of a Liberty Ship.

Caption: Merchant Ships: Liberty. Biography of a Liberty Ship. Just four weeks after the keel had been laid the ship has attained this stage in its growth. The sides have been grown appreciably in the past four days, three of the safety bulkheads are in place amidships and a fourth is just being erected toward the stern of the ship. New scaffolding is going up to permit further extension of the ship’s sides. The apparent absence of workmen is merely indicative of the efficient manner in which ships of this class are being turned out. These “Liberty Ships” are made from a standardized design in prefabricated sections which are carried to the ways intact and assembled into the ship. U.S. Office of Emergency Management Photograph.
