The images in this collection pertain mainly to the Western Front in France.    Initially, Joseph Joffre was Commander-in-Chief of the French Army until replaced by Robert Nivelle in 1916.    In May 1917, Philippe Petain became Commander-in-Chief, though, he was eventually subordinated under Supreme Allied Commander Ferdinand Foch after the Third Battle of the Aisne in May 1918.
