U.S. Navy Nurse Corps

Even before the Tonkin Gulf Incident in August 1964, U.S. Navy Nurses were serving at the U.S. Navy hospital in Saigon, South Vietnam.  Four Navy Nurses (Lieutenant Barbara Wooster, Ruth A. Mason, Grade D. Reynolds, and Frances L. Crumpton) were also the first to be awarded the Purple Heart following a Viet Cong terrorist attack that December.  Oher Vietnam locations Navy Nurses served at were the station hospital at Danang, onboard hosptial ships USS Repose (AH-16) and USS Sanctuary (AH-17) off shore.
